Category: Convention Messages, Favor of God

To be in God’s favor means to be in the right place, at the right time, with the right people, and to have the right connections. The favor of God brings us favor with people. God’s favor on Elijah brought him to Zarephath (right place), when the widow (right person) was picking sticks to prepare her last meal (right time), and the connection there was a connection of blessing. Similarly, when the Shunnamite woman in Elisha’s story lost everything and went to the king to get her property back, Gehazi was just then telling to the king the story of how Elisha had raised this Shunnamite’s son to life. When he saw her, he told to the king that this was that woman, and the king restored to her all that she had lost. She was in the right place, at the right time, with the right people, and had the right connection.

When Jesus went to Nazareth, he went to the Synagogue and opened the scroll to the place in the book of Isaiah where it read:

“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor.” (Isaiah 61:1,2; Luke 4:18, 19).

The year of the Lord’s favor referred to the Jubilee year in Leviticus 25. The Jubilee year came every 50th year. It was a Sabbath of seven seventh years. Every seventh year was a sabbath during which the land was given rest. After 49 years (7×7), the 50th year became the Sabbatical Year of Jubilee. It was the Year of the Lord’s Favor in which God moved in the lives of His people in three areas.

1. It was the Year of Rest.
The land had rest during this year.
2. It was the Year of Restoration.
Everything lost was restored in this year. It was a year of commanded blessing (Leviticus 25:21).
3. It was the Year of Release.
Slaves were released, debts were cancelled, and liberty was proclaimed through out the land in this Year.

The Jubilee Year was proclaimed on the Day of Atonement with the sound of trumpet. But, how could Jesus proclaim the Jubilee Year to the people on that day? Because He Himself was the Atonement, the Propitiation of God. He was the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world. Therefore, in Christ we have true rest (He has finished everything and we enter into the finished work of Christ), in Him we have full restoration and healing, and in Him we find perfect freedom and release from all bondage. We don’t need to strive. We just need to have our eyes open to see what God has done for us, to find the favor of God.
